Thanks for this detailed overview! It’s helped me understand the thyroid and its role much better.
I remember uttering “iodine” to my doctor and she just replied, “Oh yeah, we have iodized salt for that.” 😅
Personally, I’ve taken as much as 100mg of iodine on one day and I didn’t develop any serious issues. I’m not saying anyone should take that much but just as an example that it’s not as dangerous as they claim (the fear of iodine is based on a misleading study by Wolff and Chaikoff, later reevaluated by Dr. Abraham). I also recommend Dr. Brownstein’s work on iodine.
Thank you for the nice comment! I too have taken pretty high doses of iodine over the years without any harm. But in a public post like this caution is always the best way :)
I’ve read brownsteins book and also
The iodine crisis by Lynne farrow which is even better imo :) cheers!
Yeah, makes sense. In retrospect I wouldn’t take such high doses again anyway. I don’t even think the body can process that much in a day. It’s better when it’s more gradual. Perhaps an exception is a very advanced illness that needs immediate treatment but then I would seek professional guidance anyway.
Was looking at both books yesterday and I noticed the one from Lynne Farrow has much more depth. So I’d say I prefer that book too :)
I take 20mg Lugols per day and no problems. Iodine is water soluble and excess is normally urinated. Dr David Brownstein has treated over 8,000 thyroid patients and 96% were deficient or severely deficient. Where a person gets into trouble is if they are deficient and take too much they can have problems. Most MD's have no clue how to resolve thyroid issue and don't understand a full thyroid panel. I suggest Dr David Brownstein book/videos Why You Need Iodine and Can't Live Without It. Lynne Farrow book The Iodine Crisis, Dr Jorge Flechas YT videos.
The best book I have read on the thyroid/iodine and how our bodies work is by Dr Jerry Tennant, Healing is Voltage. The Handbook.
Iodine is required for every cell in the body and is stored in the thyroid, salivary glands, breasts, pancreas, ovaries and prostate. All cells that secrete require iodine to accomplish this task. If they stop secreting, cysts/polyps/fibroids can form. If the blood/oxygen supply is cut off you have serious problems. Iodine is required for the immune system and to produce stomach acid.
I am not a doctor or health care provider: DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!
I have read Dr brownsteins book and enjoyed it a lot. I am well aware many people take very high doses sometimes to great effect. However my article is meant to be a primer applying to a large audience. I do feel one should only do large dosing under care of someone like brownstein as I have also seen a lot of people in discussion forums messed up a lot with high dose iodine. Cheers and thanks for the comment!

Terry Naturally sells Tri-Iodine in a 12.5 mg capsule. I take it a couple times a week.
